Renfe to launch free train Wi-Fi next month

renfe-wifi_renfe-wifiSpain’s state-owned rail company Renfe will finally begin offering free Wi-Fi on its high-speed AVE trains on 03 November, over a year after Telefonica was first awarded the contract, reports Europa Press. The onboard Wi-Fi service will first of all be offered on some trains covering the Madrid-Seville route and subsequently extended to all other trains in the fleet. A ‘PlayRenfe’ platform with the ability to stream audiovisual content will also be presented on the day of the launch, said the report.

Telefonica was awarded the EUR 148.6 million contract to install and provide a Wi-Fi service on all the AVE trains in October 2015, with Renfe announcing at the time that it intended to install a free basic service for all passengers as well as a ‘premium’ paid service for higher-capacity connections allowing the streaming of content such as films or football games.
