Oil and oil product cargos transported by rail last year in Latvia rose by 2.2% to 21.76 million tons, while transportation of coal cargos dropped 5.2% to 19.1 million tons, Latvijas Dzelzcels state-owned railway company said.
Transportation of black metals last year amounted to 1.2 million tons, down 23.9% year-on-year, transportation of mineral fertilizers declined 20.3% to 3.7 million tons, and minerals were transported at the amount of 1.1 million tons, down 4%.
Transportation of timber increased by 52.5% to 1.5 million tons, transportation of chemical cargoes rose 4% to 1.8 million tons last year. There is a considerable rise in transportation of sugar – 31.9% to 124,000 tons, and grain and flour products – by 25.7% to 1.8 million tons.
Last year 55.6 million tons or cargo were transported by rail in Latvia, down 2.4% from a year ago. Latvijas Dzelzcels said that the decline was small, especially because initially a 20% drop had been expected. Export cargoes through Latvian ports have dropped considerably – by 37% to 2.8 million tons. Import cargoes last year declined 2.3% to 48 million tons.
