Starting from 7 August, the crossborder bridge linking Brownsville (USA) to Mexico became operational. The West Rail Bridge took 15 years to complete and is the first of its kind in almost 100 years.
The new project includes a 6-mile rail line on the US side. The rail line is replacing the existing rail connection between Brownsville and Matamoros.
The West Rail project, which cost USD 120 million to complete, eliminates 14 previous railroad crossings. The project is a result of the collaboration of the Cameron County, the City of Brownsville and the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority.
