The Moreton Bay Rail Link project, which was to be opened in mid-2016, has been delayed indefinitely due to a serious signalling flaw that could have caused train crashes. The order was given by Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliff, after receiving advice about the signalling issues.
“The operation of these signals is critical to safety and I never want to see a rail accident caused because we allowed a signalling system that didn’t pass muster to operate,” Stirling Hinchliff said.
According to him, it will be up to Queensland Rail to determine the project’s new schedule. An independent audit investigation will be made to determine what went wrong.
The Moreton Bay Rail Link will deliver a 12.6 km dual-track passenger rail line between Petrie and Kippa-Ring, including 6 new rail stations at Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Mango Hill, Kinsellas Road, Rothwell and Kippa-Ring.
