Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) launched, on August 24, the first tender for the Long Distance Passenger and Freight Rail project (LDP). The competition between the PMC companies is open, the submission deadline is 4 November 2015 and the award date is estimated for March 2016.
Previously, in June, the state company announced it would be issuing tenders for the initial stage of construction on the long-distance rail before the end of this year, with construction set to begin in 2016.
The first tender concerns the project management consulting (PMC) services for Phase 1.
The PMC Consultant shall be responsible for all technical, program, project and construction supervision and assurance of the Contractor and the integration of the rolling stock design, installation, testing and commissioning into the Project.
The Long Distance Passenger and Freight Rail will serve to connect residents to not only other cities in Qatar, but to population centres in the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries that includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, and Oman, through the proposed regional rail network.
When fully completed in 2030, the planned four phases of the network will cover a distance of 400 km with links to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as well as freight and passenger lines to Qatar’s main population and economic centres, including Ras Laffan Industrial City, Dukhan and Al Shamal.
