Polish rail infrastructure manager PKP PLK and BBF Sp. o.o. (Poznan) signed a contract for the modernisation of railway line to Port of Gdańsk. The value of the contract is PLN 9 million (EUR 2 million) and represents the first step of the PLN 600 million (EUR 138.8 million) investment for enhancing the railway infrastructure for freight transport to the ports. The construction will be launched in 2019 and once will be completed, the infrastructure will allow heavier freight trains.
The works include the electrification and the reconstruction of 70 km of tracks, of the turnouts and the level crossings. In addition, civil engineering works will be developed at the Local Control Center, and at two stations – Gdańsk North Harbour Gdańsk and Kaszubski Canal.
The project is part of the company’s strategy to modernise the rail infrastructure to the ports of Gdansk, Gdynia, Szczecin and Swinoujscie and the modernisation of Bydgoszcz – Tri-City route. These investment are estimated at PLN 4 billion (EUR 925.6 million) that will allow the increase of speeds and cargo volume, as well as shortening time-travel to the ports.
