Poland receives EU funding for level crossing modernisation programme

The European Commission allotted PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe a EUR 46.4 million (PLN 200 million) co-financing for the implementation of level crossing programme, under Polish Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.
On 24 September, PKP PLK signed the contract for this co-financing, which has a total value of PLN 256.7 million (EUR 59.5 million), with an EU funding of PLN 194 million (EUR 45 million).
The modernized crossings will gain new security features, including gates and traffic lights, ensuring safety for both passengers, pedestrians and drivers. The selected facilities will be equipped with new lighting and monitoring will also be installed. In addition to the replacement or assembly of new equipment, tracks and road surface will also be replaced.
Under the programme, PKP PLK will modernise 182 rail-road crossings located on 73 railway lines in Poland. Currently, work is underway on 62 crossings. The effect of the investment will be to increase the level of safety in rail and road traffic as well as to eliminate existing speed limits in the area of crossings. According to the project, 121 journeys will be additionally secured with automatic crossing signalling. On the remaining 61 passes, modern devices will replace worn out equipment.
For the vast majority of modernized crossings (132 facilities), in addition to replacing or assembling new equipment, it is also planned to improve the road infrastructure.
The new modern remote control devices will also be installed, and, as a result, the information about the condition of devices is always available at the dispatcher’s traffic, who is responsible for the safe running of trains. It is also displayed to train drivers on the so-called warning shields placed on tracks before crossings. This allows for any irregularities to react quickly and take appropriate action on the part of those responsible for the safe operation of trains.
