O&M agreement for Manila LRT Line 1

Manila LRT Line 1The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), together with Sumitomo Corporation and Hankyu Corporation, concluded an agreement for the operation and maintenance of the Manila LRT Line 1. The project is the first overseas investment in rail operation and maintenance for Hankyu Corporation and JICA, encouraging Japanese companies to expand their high-quality infrastructure business overseas.

The first phase of the extension of light rail line LRT 1 is currently under construction and expected to enter passenger operation at the end of 2024. This is the Cavite Extension Phase 1 for which the LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) is responsible. In January 2024, the project’s progress reached 97%. Both civil and system works are progressing rapidly to ensure a smooth and timely opening.

Beyond construction progress, Light Rail Manila Corporation is actively conducting test runs of various generations of LRT-1 trains, ensuring their compatibility and readiness for operations.

The LRT-1 Cavite extension phase 1, upon completion, will extend the existing line by 6.2 km. The first phase will connect Baclaran station in Pasay City to Dr. Santos station in Paranaque City. The phase 1 extension is projected to significantly reduce travel time and benefit up to 600,000 passengers daily.

Manila LRT Line 1 connects the north and south districts of Manila metropolitan area in the Philippines.

LRT Line 1 is one of the most important transport networks in Metro Manila, covering a distance of approximately 20 km. It is expected to play an even greater role in supporting the development of the area, with a southern extension of approximately 7 km scheduled to open and five new stations to be installed by the end of 2024.

This project promotes the enhancement of urban transport connectivity and the alleviation of traffic congestion in Metro Manila and its suburbs, implementing operational improvements to existing facilities on the major north-south railroad LRT Line 1.
