Efficient integration of Ukraine in global economy is one of the main prerequisites for economic development and this means, of course, fundamental changes in the country’s transport system. Under the circumstances, modern ports will no longer afford to be just cargo transshipment points to transport modes, they have to be active in optimising the participation share in the integration of transport systems, built on concepts of logistics chains offering added value to the entire transport chain which stresses the international commercial activity and the distribution of freight.
Odessa Port is an important element in the transport system integration connecting industrial and commercial activities to ensure the best competitiveness and supply quality services. Odessa Port is one of the largest ports to the Black Sea located in the north-west part of the sea and established to serve commercial activities on the east-west axis.
With a surface of more than 140 hectares, the port owns cargo handling systems, including container terminals with a capacity of 900,000TEU/year. Technical capacities permit the handling of over 20 million tonnes of dry goods and 25 million tonnes of bulk per year. The infrastructure has the capacity to support the delivery of freight and use all transport routes. An area called “Dry Port” is constantly developed to deliver great efficiency in the processing of containers. This area is also a bridge providing access to the port for the transport of freight passing through the city. Next to its partners, Odessa Port disposes of 51 hectares for the development of the Dry Port area concerning the development of a multimodal logistics centres and including three modes of transport – maritime, railway and road. Therefore, constructions are necessary for developing a railway section, warehouses, a container terminal and an office building, necessary investments amounting to around USD 125 Million.
Moreover, the “Quarantine pier” project is developed in the port area as part of the 2020 Strategy launched by the authorities (since 2010 on 3 years). The project is developed on a surface of 19,4 hectares and requires investments of USD 557.7 Million.
The project is aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Odessa Port by developing transport potential in Odessa Region, increasing container traffic in the Port, delivering efficient transshipment and freight management services.
In the port development strategy up to 2060 (project approved by the Ministry of Transport in 2011), funds of around UAH 40 Billion (around USD 5 Billion) are necessary for the implementation of the projects for the construction of facilities and infrastructure and the reconstruction and modernisation of the existing infrastructure. As a result of these programmes, the capacity of Odessa Port will increase by 100 million tonnes on condition that projects receive constant additional financing.
International transport corridors which pass through Odessa:

Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.
2. Gdansk-Odessa (the Baltic sea – the Black sea), connecting Italy, Slovenia, Hungary,
Slovakia, Ukraine.
3. Europe-Caucasus – Asia (TRACECA), connecting Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria,
