The Austrian Federal Railways – ÖBB has ordered the first 70 trains from Siemens in the framework agreement won by Siemens Mobility in late summer 2023.
The trains will be delivered in three different versions from the end of 2027. The trains are a further development of the Mireo electric multiple units. Designed to operate at speeds of up to 100mph, Mireo offers numerous passenger amenities including air conditioning, WiFi service, electric sockets, ski and snowboard racks, capacity for prams and wheelchairs near the doors, and space for bicycles. The carriages will be wider than previous Mireo trains to further enhance the travel experience for ÖBB customers. And, for the first time, Siemens Mobility is designing the new bogie trains with internal roller bearings as a unique wagon concept.
ÖBB has ordered innovative trains from Siemens
Mireo’s lightweight construction and resulting low energy consumption, as well as air conditioning systems using an environmentally friendly refrigerant and heat pump, ensure greater sustainability. Thanks to the low energy consumption, the trains are particularly environmentally friendly. The bodies are made of aluminium and a new lightweight construction technology is also used for the bogies with internal bearings.
The Mireos will use SF7500 bogies, which were developed at Siemens Mobility’s competence centre for bogies in Graz and have long proven their worth internationally. Unlike previous Mireo trains, in which two carriages share a so-called “Jacobs bogie”, each ÖBB Mireo carriage has two bogies. Some of these are powered by high-performance traction motors, providing acceleration that is optimally balanced between traction and energy efficiency. The bogies are designed with internal bearings to save weight and space, and the extra space gained is used to relocate other components under the wagon body. This improves train handling and gives passengers more space and an improved spatial experience.
Mireo trains will be built within Siemens’ global network of train manufacturing facilities. The state-of-the-art bogies will be manufactured at the Siemens Mobility competence centre in Graz.
“Siemens Mobility and ÖBB have long enjoyed a strong and trusted partnership. We are particularly proud to deliver a further development of the Mireo platform to ÖBB as a unique wagon concept for the company’s new fleet. With their many innovations, cross-border capability and high level of passenger comfort and convenience, the new Mireo trains will contribute to increasing the attractiveness of ÖBB’s local and regional transport”, says Michael Peter, CEO Siemens Mobility.
The order consists of 11 local trains with a length of 73 metres and 28 trains with a length of 106 metres, which will be used in different federal regions. A further 31 trains with a length of 106 metres for long-distance transport within the Alps complete the first order. Siemens Mobility’s state-of-the-art European Train Control System [ETCS] will be used to control the trains. Together with the appropriate infrastructure, the system enables train intervals to be significantly reduced, which is an important economic factor on particularly congested routes.
