Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), Australia, has awarded RailConnect JV a AUD 2.3 billion (EUR 1.56 billion) contract to build and maintain more than 500 new carriages.
The first train is expected to be delivered in 2019, and all carriages will be put into service on intercity routes in Newcastle, the Central Coast, South Coast and the Blue Mountains.
The new fleet will include modern CCTV surveillance technology, help points and digital screens and announcements to ensure a safe and secure journey.
Fleet maintenance will be undertaken at a new facility in Kangy Angy, which is located between Sydney and Newcastle on the Central Coast of NSW. Hyundai and Mitsubishi Electric Australia will serve as technology provider and will be responsible for the delivery of the fleet, while UGL will support design and testing.
RailConnect is a joint venture between the Hyundai Rotem Company, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and UGL Rail.
