NSB passenger trains to get better 4G coverage

Norwegian NSB WiFi_binary-1102-281Norwegian passenger trains are to be provided with better 4G coverage along the busiest routes, according to state railway operator NSB, national railway administration Jernbaneverket, and telecommunications operator Telenor. The first improvements will be around Oslo and Stavanger. Reception in tunnels will be improved, too.
The upgrades will go on for several years, and will be coordinated by the three bodies. They will decide which stretches of line to prioritise. Telenor will be responsible for upgrading or establishing mobile base stations along the railway lines, NSB will update receivers and transmitters on the trains, and the railway administration will provide its expertise as well as access to land around the tracks. Other railway operators are welcome to become involved. In 2015, the upgrades will cover the routes Oslo-Lorenskog-Gardermoen, Oslo-Fredrikstad, Oslo-Tonsberg, and Stavanger-Bryne.
