North Dakota’s Senate has approved funds for a state-run rail safety pilot program intended to supplement federal oversight of oil train traffic. The value of the program, which is part of the Public Service Commission’s budget, is $523,000 (470,000 euros). The funds will cover the first two years of the program, which will last four years in total.
The pilot program will see two rail safety inspectors and a rail safety manager supplementing inspections by the Federal Railroad Administration. It also requires railroads to offer training to fire departments located along oil train routes.
