Norfolk Southern Railway Co. is planning a USD 34 million project to expand its transportation hub at Rickenbacker AirportNorfolk Southern Railway Co. is planning a USD 34 million project to expand its transportation hub at Rickenbacker Airport.
The company hopes to expand capacity by 40 percent at the so-called intermodal facility, where cargo arrives and departs by rail, truck and air. Norfolk Southern said the facility is now operating at or beyond capacity.
“The Rickenbacker Intermodal Facility is an integral part of connecting businesses in the Columbus region with domestic and internal markets, and this proposed expansion would solidify its role as an economic force for central Ohio,” said David Pidgeon, spokesman for Norfolk Southern.
The company applied for a USD17 million federal grant to match its own USD 17 million investment in the proposed project, which would lengthen tracks and add trailer parking spots and a crane.
The Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which operates Rickenbacker, is a co-applicant for the grant. The grant would come through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s annual Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program. It funds projects with a USD 500 million pool of money through a competitive application process.
