Transport for NSW awarded Downer EDI Ltd the Managing Contractor to deliver the fixed infrastructure Newcastle Light Rail project.
Under the contract, Downer will work with Transport for NSW to design, construct and commission 2.7 km of light rail track, six stops, a stabling and maintenance facility, road works and associated precinct works. The track will run from the new transport interchange at Wickham to Pacific Park.
The contract is scheduled to commence this August and be completed in 2019.
The LRT will have a capacity of move 1200 passengers an hour.
Newcastle Light Rail is an important new transport initiative that will transform the city centre. It will strengthen connections between the city and the waterfront, create new jobs, provide more public space and amenity, and deliver more public transport – activating Hunter and Scott streets and bringing people back into the city centre.
