Transport for New South Wales said that the biggest uplift to weekend train services in more than a decade will be delivered in 2017 in an attempt to ease crippling weekend road traffic.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance announced more than 750 new train services will be added, following a massive 68 per cent growth in weekend demand on Sydney’s train network between 2013 and 2016.
“We know that Saturday traffic in Sydney is often worse than week day morning peak hours. Sundays are also hugely popular for travel, so we’re boosting services to give people more options on the weekend. There are 14 million car trips made every weekend in this city. We need to encourage more of those people on to our trains, which would make an incredible difference to our road network,” Constance said.
Key service improvements include 6 lines and will boost service frequencies at many suburban stations to a train every 15 minutes on weekends with all the additional services starting by the end of 2017.
This is the next step in the ‘More Trains, More Services’ programme, a capital investment of over AUD 1.5 billion (USD 1.14 billion) to provide an urgent uplift in customer service on greater Sydney’s rail network.
