The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has given the start to tram services along North Rampart Street and St. Claude Avenue for the first time in 67 years. Trams run from Elysian Fields past Canal Street to the Union Passenger Terminal on Calliope Street every 20 minutes, according to the RTA.
Construction of the 1.6 mile track stretching from Canal Street to Elysian Fields took 20 months to complete. The project’s cost was USD 40.6 million. Archer Western, which built the Loyola Avenue streetcar, was the contractor.
Transdev, the RTA’s private manager, announced that it would invest USD 2.9 million into operating the tram line and increasing its bus service throughout the city.
