The city of Milwaukee is trying to obtain a federal grant to cover half of the cost of building an extension of the tram system. The plan for the first phase of the tram system foresees a 2.1-mile (3.3 km) loop through the central business district that is expected to open for service in July 2018.
The first extension of that system will run along East Michigan and East Clybourn streets to the lakefront near the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World. This extension, together with the purchase of an additional tram and other system upgrades are estimated at USD 30 million.
Milwaukee will apply for a federal grant ammounting to USD 15 million to cover half of that cost and will fund the rest using tax incremental financing. The USD 15 million would come from the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program. The schedule for building the extension has not been established yet.
