Metro de Madrid, the metro transport operator in the Spanish capital, is now developing a programme of EUR 20 million for the re-technologisation of 42 metro trains of 2000B series operating on line 5, as well as 12 trains of 3000B series to enter operation on this route in 2018. Line 5 is one of the busiest and most crowded metro line in Madrid. The re-technologisation procedure takes place in the operator’s rolling stock maintenance workshops in Canillejas. The operation is part of a programme worth EUR 66 million for the modernisation of line 5, including re-signalling, the installation of Tetra digital telecommunications signal and the replacement of the catenary.
Apart from new on-board signalling equipment, Line 5 rolling stock fleet benefits of LED lighting, while the air-conditioning system will also be upgraded, as well as the train doors to improve reliability. Also, a new driver’s cab will be installed.
After modernisation, the first 21 units of the 2000B series will re-enter operation on 3 September, with the reopening of Line 5. The rest of the 2000B trains will be upgraded by January 2018.
“All these works are aimed to increase the frequency and the number of trains that operate on this metro line by up to 44% and, consequently, to provide a reliable answer to increasing transport demand on Line 5”, declared Pedro Rollán, councillor within the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Madrid regional government.
