The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, officially inaugurated the transport services on the second phase of Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT, in Klang Valley. The opening of the second phase completes the entire 51 km SBK Line allowing commuters an easy access to Kuala Lumpur city center.
The phase two of the SBK Line stretches from Semantan station to the Kajang station and involves a 30 km line of which 9.5 km is underground and 20.5 km is elevated. 19 stations were constructed, of which 7 are underground stations.
The phase one or the northern section, which was opened in December 2016, is linking the Sunghai Buloh station to Semantan station on a 21 km elevated line. Each train set serving the line has four cars, allowing a total capacity of 1,200 passengers. The daily ridership is estimated to be about 400,000 passengers.
“All the 7 interchange stations of the SBK Line are operational under the Phase Two. This will allow commuters to easily transfer from MRT service to the other rail services to Kuala Lumpur,” Marcus Karakashian, MRT Corp SBK Line project director said.
Within the project, seven park and ride facilities are opened.
SBK Line is the first MRT line in Malaysia. The whole line – together with this second phase, has a length of 51 km and 31 stations. The line starts from Sungai Buloh, located to the north-west of Kuala Lumpur, and runs through the city centre of Malaysia’s capital city before ending in Kajang, a fast developing town to the south-east of the city.
According to MRT Corp, with the Klang Valley MRT, the target of having 50% of all journeys in the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley region to be on public transport can be achieved.
