Light rail network in Frankfurt to receive over EUR 280 million

Frankfurt Municipality has begun the project to extend the light rail transport network. Thus, the 2.7-kilometer extension of the U5 light rail line from Frankfurt Central Station to the Europaviertel area is estimated at EUR 281.4 million. Of this sum, the Hessen Land will provide EUR 31 million in funding.

The rest of the funding will be provided by the Municipality of Frankfurt, the German Federal Government budget and Stadtwerke Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF), which operates a network of nine metro lines and ten tram lines.

Authorities estimate that the U5 light rail line will begin commercial operation by the end of 2022. The new extension will serve four stations, including one located underground, at Güterplatz.

The construction of the underground station is carried out by a consortium consisting of PORR Germany and Stump Spezialtiefbau. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will be commissioned in 2018, and tunnel excavation will take five years. Work on the surface section of the light rail will begin in 2020.
