Uzbekistan Railways has officially started implementation of the project for the electrification of the Karshi-Termez railway line, one of the longest rail lines in Uzbekistan.
The length of the rail line is 325 kilometers, while the volume of investments in the project is USD 388.23 million. In addition to electrification, the project involves modernization of existing telecommunications devices, modernization of old equipment and the repair of electric locomotives.
The majority of funds for the project will be provided by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the form of a loan.
On March 10 Uzbekistan Railways has signed a contract with the German DB International to provide consulting services within the frameworks of the project of electrification of Karshi-Termez railway section in southern Uzbekistan.
Karshi-Termez railway section includes a new railway line Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan, which was built in 2007 with financial assistance from Japan.
