Israel: works completed for Karmiel-Akko rail line

The Israeli Ministry of Transportation has announced the completion of the Karmiel-Akko railway line and the start of trial runs on the line. The line was built by the Netivei Israel National Transport Infrastructure Co. Ltd. The cost of the project was NIS 2.8 billion (713 million euros). Services to the public are scheduled to begin this summer.
The project involves a double track along 23 kilometers with stations at Karmiel and Ahihud. The new line includes the 4.6 kilometer Gillon Tunnels. Two more stations are planned along the new line at the Arab towns of Jadeidi-Makr and Majd al-Krum. In the future the Karmiel line will be extended northeast to Kiryat Shmona.
