Iran intends to purchase 70 electric locomotives

MAPNADuring the announcement on Iran-Germany agreement for transport cooperation, the Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development, Abbas Akhundi, said that hopes the negotiations to purchase 70 electric locomotives with transfer of its know-how will come to conclusion.
On January 16, the two countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for transport cooperation, involving the production of 50 diesel locomotives. These vehicles will be manufactured at Mapna Locomotive Factory in Karaj, in cooperation with Siemens. Iran will use parts delivered from Siemens’ facility in Munich.
Mapna Locomotive was established in 2007 and started with the production of 150 ER24 Locomotives under license of Siemens company.
Iran has 165 diesel locomotives, of which 130 are in operation and 35 are being repaired. To meet transport requirements, Iran needs 150 new locomotives.
