Trams have already begun running on the new 4.3 km section with 12 stations located in Olympisches Dorf area of Austrian city Innsbruck. Trams are now connecting Leipziger Platz to Josef-Kerschbuamer-Strasse, and trams 2 and 5 are running on this recently inaugurated section. The rolling stock is manufactured by Bombardier. Under the project, a new connection over Inn river has also been built. The whole project, including the extension of the tram line in the area, has increased transport capacity by 40% compared to the bus line that used to serve Olympisches Dorf area. The project amounted to EUR 290 million and has been financed by Innsbruck Municipality and by Tirol Land. The line is part of Regionalbahn project which, in turn, envisages the extension of the tram network across the whole city of Innsbruck. Consequently, the next phases of the project envisage the extension of the network on a 1.2km section from Schützenstrasse on the new railway to Rum, as well as its extension on a 2.2 km section from Technik West to Völs. The two sections will be put into operation in 2021.
