India: Railway Minister calls on JV establishment for rail projects

India’s Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu urged the state government to set up a joint venture with the Railways to facilitate implementation of more infrastructure projects.
“I request the Ministers to take this up and just sign an agreement. As far as the South Indian state Tamil Nadu is concerned, I have written to the Chief Minister time and again for joint ventures. In the case of other States, we have already signed some (agreements) and are going ahead with the projects,” Prabhu said.
According to the minister, efforts were being made to boost investment in the transport sector. “The next wave of investment is in the transportation sector. Huge infusion of capital will create infrastructure,” he said.
We remind that for FY 2017-2018, India’s authorities have announced that will allot USD 59 billion to transport projects, including railways, road and air transport. This year, it was launched the 2019 rail strategy that involves rail projects on infrastructure, passenger and freight transport. Within the programme, there will be allotted investments for infrastructure expandind and modernisation, for the construction of new terminals, as well as for the construction of high speed lines.
