Hyundai Rotem will build a rolling stock assembly plant in Brazil. The South Korean railcar manufacturer signed an agreement with the government of the state of São Paulo.
The plant will be located at Araraquara on land owned by Hyundai-Rotem’s Brazilian partner Iesa, Hyundai Rotem said in a statement. The company will assemble light railcars, commuter trains and metro trains at the new facility.
The decision to build the plant comes after Hyundai-Rotem won a contract to supply 30 self-propelled electric trains, known as EMUs, to São Paulo commuter rail operator Paulista Metropolitan Trains Company. The Korean company is also supplying 55 trains for the Salvador metro through concessionaire CCR and has also supplied the train fleet for São Paulo’s metro Line 4.
