Lisbon Metro awarded Hitachi Rail a contract to deliver a new passenger information system enabling real-time traffic information broadcasts and supporting a wide range of multimedia formats. The contract includes the complete overhaul of the central systems, the installation of new screens at 10 stations, and the implementation of passenger address systems at all stations.

The scalable and modular cutting-edge APIS solution will empower Lisbon Metro to advance the digitisation of information across its entire network, including rolling stock and surface-level data.

With the new passenger information system, “Lisbon Metro customers will have access to relevant real-time travel information, enabling greater efficiency in their journeys and better integration with other modes of transport. We are confident that this new service, resulting from the signed contract, will further strengthen the quality of the service we provide daily to the Lisbon Metropolitan area,” Maria Helena Campos, Acting Chairwoman of Metropolitano de Lisboa, said.

This contract represents the revival of a partnership between Hitachi Rail and Lisbon Metro. It also solidifies Hitachi Rail’s homegrown APIS solution, which will now be operational across Portugal’s three main rail transport infrastructures including Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro, and Infraestruturas de Portugal.

The agreement strongly aligns with Hitachi Rail’s broader mission to enhance connectivity, streamline journeys, and promote sustainable transport for passengers, customers, and communities alike.

“This contract is a testament to the quality and functionality of Hitachi Rail’s APIS product. We are thrilled to welcome Lisbon Metro back as a customer and look forward to showcasing our capabilities while fostering a stronger relationship,” João Araújo, President of the Board of Directors at Hitachi Rail GTS Portugal, said.

The 44.4 km comprising four lines of Lisbon Metro are served by 56 stations. In 2023, Metropolitano de Lisboa transported 161.8 million passengers, an increase of 28.1 million, representing an increase of 21.1% compared to 2022. When announced the results, at the beginning of 2024, the company said that the number of passengers represents a reduction of 11.9 million passengers compared to 2019 – the pre-pandemic year.

Lisbon Metro is expanding its system with a new 4 km Red Line extension for which five bidders submitted their offer. The company is also constructing a new extension – the Circular Line – which will deliver access to metro services in the city areas that are not currently covered by the metro system.
