Gothenburg Port Line is expanded to a double-track line

Thus, on December 19, Trafikverket announced that the Gothenburg Port Line is double-tracked  and now the line ensures rail connection towards the North and also to the South of Sweden.

Port Line in Gothenburg, which is one of the most important links for Swedish exports and imports, is now being expanded in stages to double to an increased capacity.

”The expansion of the Port Line is one of the most important projects to increase freight traffic in Sweden today and a prerequisite for the Port of Gothenburg to grow”, says Svante Jonsson, project manager for the Port Line at Trafikverket. The combination of sea and rail is the most efficient mode of transport both from an environmental and economic perspective.

Currently the line serves Hamnbanan with 70 trains per day. When the planned phases are developed, the increased capacity will make possible to operate 160 trains per day.
Southern Marieholmsbron was completed in March this year, at the same time began to Trafikverket renovate Northern Marieholmsbron. The renovation is now complete and from December 19, there are two tracks over the river.

Southern Marieholmsbron would, according to the national plan begin to be built only in 2018. However, to accelerate the construction of the bridge was partially financed by the City, the Port of Gothenburg, Västra Götaland and Volvo.

Port Line is one of the main rail links, and makes it possible for freight from the entire Nordic region to reach the port areas in Gothenburg. About 60% of Sweden’s container traffic and 30% of foreign trade goes through the Port of Gothenburg.

The entire project is estimated at SEK 1.9 billion (EUR 200 million), excluding the Southern Marieholmsbron which costs SEK 315 million (EUR 33 million).
