Gdańsk central station modernisation contract awarded

Polish Railway Lines and Intercor Sp. z o.o. signed a PLN 62 million (EUR 14.68 million) contract for the modernisation of Gdańsk Główny railway station. Preparatory works will be launched in July and the project should be completed in January 2020.
As part of the modernisation project the station’s interior will be completely rebuilt, the entrances and the halls will be adapted for passengers with disabilities. Under the contract, the company will rebuild all the platforms, the sheds will be renovated preserving the historical value, the two existing underground passages will be rebuild and will be installed 4 elevators and escalators, including the information systems that will provide passengers all transport information they need. In addition, a new pedestrian crossing will be built that will link the existing ones with the station building and tram stops. This will increase the accessibility within the station and to the public transport system.
Currently, the pedestrian traffic in the area of the station takes place via two tunnels. The first one connects the station with platforms 1 and 2 exclusively and it is impossible for disabled people to access the platform from the station on their own, as there are only steps. The second tunnel connects the station with the opposite side of Podwale Grodzkie street, bus and tram stops, platforms 1-5 and the bus station.
The Gdańsk Główny railway station is located in the center of the city and is an important transport hub, as it provides access to railway transport and city’s public transport system. The station features five island platforms, of which three function for railway transport system in Poland’s Tricity area, two long distance services and regional services.
