The new ICE Sprinter high-speed train made its first journey between the German capital Berlin and Munich, with only select guests invited for the trip. Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz described the €10 billion project as “a historic achievement.” “This is the biggest improvement that has ever been made to the service provided by Deutsche Bahn,” he said.
Trains will start following the scheduled timetable in August, but without passengers. For the general public tickets will go on sale in October, while the first public journey will take place on 10 December.
The new “Sprinter” trains complete the journey in 3.55 hours, two hours less compared to current journey times. Construction on the route started in 1996 and finished last year. The 107-kilometre line has 22 tunnels and 29 bridges and allows trains to travel at speeds of up to 300 km/h.
