A total of 6.3 million tons of freight was transported on the rail network of Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee in the first six months of this year, 6.2% less than in the same period of 2016.
Container carriage fell by 15.2% to 15,900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Transit shipments declined by 15.8% to 3.9 million tons. Local shipments meanwhile grew by 30% to 1.6 million tons. Import shipments fell by 8.7% to 620,000 tons, while export shipments remained on the same level as last year, totaling 100,000 tons.
The leading category of goods transported by rail was that of fertilizers with 2.2 million tons (+12.4%), followed by oil products with 1.4 million tons (-43%), oil shale with 1.2 million tons (+23.3%) and chemical products with 530,000 tons (+12.5%).
In June, Eesti Raudtee carried 880,000 tons of goods.
