The Polish rail infrastructure manager PKP PLK has started the electrification of the 49 km Ełk – Giżycko section on the Ełk – Korsze rail line which will provide faster and more efficient journeys.
The electrification of the section will be performed under a EUR 141.3 million contract signed in December 2021.
The project covers track modernisation and the installation of control devices. The increase in the level of safety will take place after the construction of two collision-free intersections in Giżycko and Wydminy and after the reconstruction of rail-road crossings and 59 engineering structures such as bridges, viaducts and culverts.
Due to the investment project, the capacity of the route will increase, which means that more trains will be able to run. After completing all the works, the journey from Olsztyn to Ełk via Korsze and Giżycko will be shortened by 50 minutes with a total travel time of less than 2 hours.
The contractor is to start the construction of the traction network after the site is prepared, special equipment will install the foundations for the poles on which the net will be hung.Preparation of facilities for reconstruction will begin at stations and stops.
Thanks to this investment, the comfort of train service at 5 stops and stations in Woszczele, Stare Juchy, Wydminy, Siedliska and Giżycko will be improved and passengers will benefit comfortable travel conditions thanks to new platforms equipped with benches, shelters and passenger information systems. Brightly lit objects will be adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. The platforms will be higher, which will make getting on and off the trains more comfortable.
The completion of the project will allow increased speed from 80 km/h to 160 km/h.
The works are carried out under the project on the modersanisation and electrification of mainline No. 38 on the 100 km long Ełk – Korsze rail section and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024. The PLN 649 million (EUR 138.5 million) project is co-financed by the European Union from the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme with PLN 499 million (EUR 106.5 million). The next stages of the project will be implemented under the future financial perspective in 2021-2027.
