EIB supports Tampere tram project

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided a EUR 150 million loan to the City of Tampere, southern Finland, for the construction of the first section of this tramline. With a length of 15 km, the new line will link the city centre and eastbound suburbs and is scheduled to open in 2021.
“We are thankful for the financing and the support granted by the European Investment Bank. Tampere will be the second metropolitan area in Finland. The growth of our region is the second fastest in the country. This day takes us one step closer to our objective of having one of the smartest transport systems in Europe. We have initiated a Smart Mobility project, which aims to create an internationally recognised testing and innovation ground for smart traffic in the Tampere region”, said the Mayor of the City of Tampere, Lauri Lyly.
At the end of 2016, the city awarded Pöyry, YIT and VR Track the contract for the construction of this tram section, valuated at EUR 238.8 million. The line will start at city centre, crossing Hervanta to the Central Hospital. Under the contract, a depot will be constructed in Hervanta.
According to the plans, the second phase of construction will take place in 2021-2024. It will expand the rail network from the city centre to Lentävänniemi.
Regarding the needed rolling stock, the Tampere City Board has recommended Transtech to supply the light rail vehicles for phase one of its new tram network.
Transtech Oy will build between 15 and 20 light rail vehicles for the system. The contract includes maintenance and options for up to 46 additional vehicles.
The unit value of each tram will be between EUR 3.2 million and EUR3.8 million depending on the final number.
