Cairo Metro Line 3

Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and a consortium led by Vinci was awarded a contract to prepare the preliminary design and submit a technical proposal for the implementation of Cairo Metro Line 3 Phase 4C project.

The consortium includes Bouygues, Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction and should complete the design within 12 months.

The contract was signed by Taker Hamed Gewaily, the Chairman of the National Authority For Tunnels and the CEOs of the consortium’s companies in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister Kamel El-Wazir, responsible for industrial development, as well as Minister of Industry and Transport.

“The extension of Cairo Metro Line 3 and the implementation of phase 4C from Heliopolis station to the Airport to connect this vital area with the metro network and the electrified rail network will support multimodal connections and will deliver modern transport services,” Kamel El-Wazir said.

The Ministry of Transport is studying the extension of Line 3 through the construction of 4C section in tunnel from the existing Heliopolis station, crossing Al-Hegaz Square and Military Academy area to Sheraton District and from here to Cairo International Airport and will be connected to the existing heavy-rail system. Phase 4C is expected to be 7 km long with five underground stations.

Line 3 also delivers connections with Line 1 at Nasser station, with Line 2 at Cairo University station and Attaba station. The line has also connection to the light rail system through Adly Mansour station, with the East Nile monorail at Stadium station and West Nile monorail at Wadi El Nil station.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that “the consortium was chosen as the contractor for the first, second and third phase of Line 3 and as well as the tunnel part of the fourth phase, so that there will be compatibility in all systems of the project such as signalling, communication and control systems.”

Regarding the application of the same technical specifications, the consortium will submit the initial design, the technical and financial presentation of the project and determine the most appropriate solution for the Cairo Metro Line 3 Phase 4C in coordination with the parties concerned to complete the future contracting procedures for implementation.

The first phase of the line was opened in 2012 and in 2022, Cairo Metro Line 3 Phase 3A entered into commercial operation while this spring the  metro phase 3C between Kit Kat and the Cairo University was inaugurated.

Phase 4 is the last extension of the line with the first phase opened in 2019, followed by phase 4B in 2020.
