Dar es Salaam port records growth in containerization

Dar es Salaam-port_indexThe authorities at Dar es Salaam announced the intention to build a USD 7.6 billion (Sh15 trillion) standard gauge railway line for the intermodal transport.
Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Ltd (TICTS) CEO Paul Wallace, who handles cargo at the port of Dar es Salaam, says cargo containers have been increasing at about 8% every year. Wallace appreciates the intention to build a standard gauge railway, seeing this as a practical solution to alleviate ports. In October last, Tanzania started construction on a USD10 billion port and special economic zone in Bagamoyo, a project backed by China and Oman, that aims to transform Tanzania into a regional trade and transport hub. The port will be able to handle mega-ships – with a container vessel size of 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) – after the first phase is completed. Tanzania signed a USD565 million deal with the World Bank and other development partners during 2015, aiming to expand the port of Dar es Salaam as part of plans to boost the nation’s role as a regional trade hub.
