Danish Railways to procure new electric locomotives

Danish Railways_IC4-Train-DenmarkThe Board of Directors of the Danish Railways (DSB) approved plans to procure 26 electric locomotives to replace its class ME diesel locomotives. The main task of the new locomotives will be to operate  double-decker carriages and run regional traffic in Sjælland. Also, the new electric fleet will support the phasing out of DSB’s IC2 and IC4 electric multiple units.
“ Along with the long-term plans for the purchase of new electric multiple units, it is now possible to plan a controlled phasing out of IC2 and IC4 trains. Based on our operating experience, we must conclude that IC4 not become the backbone of the Danish rail traffic, but will be part of the solution, until the electrification of rail is completed.” says DSB Chairman, Peter Schütze.

“The purchase of electric locomotives are the first step in a process designed to ensure DSB modern electrically powered equipment to lift the future traffic challenges, “said Flemming Jensen, Managing Director of DSB.
The supply of new electric locomotives is scheduled for autumn 2016 in order to be able to put the first locomotives in operation from the beginning of 2020.
