Tanzania’s President John Magufuli officially launched the construction of the country’s first Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line. Under the first phase of the construction, the line will have 300 km and will link Dar es Salaam city and Morogoro and will be put into service in 2019. Within the project, 6 main stations and 6 stops will be constructed. It will have a capacity of 10,000 tonnes and will allow passenger trains to run at speeds of 160 km/h.
The value of the project is USD 1.21 billion and will be undertaken by Yapi Merkez Insaat Ve Sanayi (Turkey) and Mota-Engil, Engenharie and Construcao Africa, SA (Portugal).
Tanzania plans to build its standard gauge rail network and for the next phases, the Government has launched in November 2016 the tenders for the construction of the remaining line sections, valuated at USD 7.6 billion. This involves the construction of the infrastructure to link Morogoro with Mwanza.
Reli Assets Holding Company Limited (RAHCO) announced the four tenders for design and build contract for the remaining stretch of the railway line that will link Dar es Salaam port with the landlocked neighbouring Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern part of DR Congo and facilitate transport in the central corridor.
Under the contracts, 1057 km of a new line will be built that includes the following sections: Morogoro – Makutopora (336 km), Makutopora – Tabora (294 km), Tabora – Isaka (133 km) and Isaka – Mwanza (294 km).
