After many years of planning the construction of the Tel Aviv light rail began on August 2nd. Excavations started near the Allenby Street-Yehuda Halevi Street intersection, where one of the light rail stations will be located. The construction of the light rail system in Tel Aviv is expected to take six years. The construction is being carried out by the China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG), which won a bid of close to NIS 3 billion (USD 800 million) to help build the light rail in Tel Aviv.
The decades long talked about project had known its ups and downs. But the Gush Dan area is the most populated and it cannot continue like this without proper public transportation,” Minister of Transportation Yisrael Katz said. “I’m certain that this project will be carried out as planned and ultimately Tel Aviv will have a leading-edge transportation system like it should be.”
