Sydney Metro tunneling works reached Martin Place station, located 28 metres under city’s CBD, as part of Chatswood – Sydenham section of City & Southwest project.
The TBM Nancy that arrived at the new Martin Place Station, has tunnelled 6.8 km via the new metro stations at Waterloo, Central and Pitt Street. The TBM will complete the last 1.3-km section between Martin Place and Barangaroo.
The station is integrated with the existing Martin Place station and serves Sydney’s high-end commercial and financial district, the Macquarie Street precinct and the Pitt Street retail zone. The station construction works include building an underground platform-to-platform connection between the existing station and the Sydney Metro Martin Place station. This is mainly to be built by excavating new pedestrian tunnels from the Sydney Metro construction site.
After just 11 months of tunnelling, 22 km of the Sydney Metro tunnels are finished, representing 70 per cent of new twin metro railway tunnels.
The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project has an estimated cost of AUD 12.5 billion (USD 8.4 billion). The project extends the metro services from the city’s north west on a new 30-km metro line from Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and south west to Bankstown.
Sydney Metro City & Southwest consists of two main sections. The Chatswood – Sydenham section will have a length of 15.5 km twin tunnels served by 6 new stations. The 13.5-km Sydenham – Bankstown will be upgraded to accommodate metro system requirements. Under this project, 11 stations will be converted to a metro standard.
