China and Thailand sign railway agreement

thailand-chinaThai and Chinese authorities signed an agreement covering joint construction and operation of two new standard gauge railway lines, from the Northeast to Bangkok and to the eastern seacoast, bangkokpost.com reports.
The document was signed by Transport Minister Prajin Juntong and deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission of China Wang Xiaotao.
The agreement forsees the joint construction and operation of the new railway, from the northeastern province of Nong Khai to two destinations, Bangkok and Map Ta Phut industrial area of Rayong on the eastern seacoast. The Nong Khai – Map Ta Phut standard gauge railway will be 734 km long, while the branch Kaeng Khoi – Bangkok will be 133 kilometres long.
China will design the railway, build the lines and operate them for the first three years. Thailand will take part in the operation over the three following years and then take over afterwards. The project is estimated at 328 billion baht (9.3 billion euros).
