China and Russia launched the first refrigerated container train

rusaiaTransContainer and RZD Logistics have commenced testing new rail technology for shipping perishable goods from China to Russia. The first refrigerated train left Dalian in China for Orekhovo-Zyevo station on Moscow Railways on 8 August 2016.
During this test run, the shipment consisted of six 40-foot containers with fruit and vegetable products.
The containers are connected to the diesel-generator wagon throughout the entire route in order to maintain the required temperature.
Train travel time will be about 18 days, but when all the necessary technical processes have been developed, delivery times can be optimised at just 12 days, which is on average three times faster than sea transport, whereby the cost of rail transport is competitive with road transport due to the minimal cost of shipping goods on Chinese territory and optimal logistics.
When the service reaches its full working capacity, regular weekly shipments consisting of up to 4 refrigerated trains with eight 40-foot containers will be possible.
In addition to fruit and vegetables, this service will also be able to transport frozen and chilled products and medical and pharmaceutical goods.
The service is also optimal for transporting electronic goods in winter, when maintaining a specific temperature regime is required.
