Transport Canada has ordered Canadian Pacific Railway to change its freight rail scheduling and fatigue-management practices for some operations in British Columbia. The reason for this order is that they pose “an immediate threat to safe railway operations.”
The review of working conditions was prompted by complaints from “multiple crew members” working so-called extended service runs between Kamloops and the Greater Vancouver Area.
The Transport Canada order requires CP to remedy the situation immediately by including all travel time from CP rest facilities to train terminals when calculating the length of an employee’s on-duty time; allowing employees to rest if the train they haveve been waiting for gets cancelled; and improving train schedules so employees can better predict their next on-duty shift.
