CAF unveils New Generation Sprinter for Netherlands

Netherlands Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen-NS) announced that the first New Generation Sprinter EMU has left CAF’s plant at Beasain in northern Spain. In 2018, the first new Sprinter trains will enter commercial service on the track in the Netherlands.

The first set will undergo dynamic testing at the test centre in Velim, Czech Republic, while the second train will be sent to Vienna for tests in the Rail Tec Arsenal climatic chamber.

Netherlands Railways placed a EUR 510 million order with CAF in December 2015 for 118 suburban trains, which are based on CAF’s Civity platform. The order comprises 68 three-car and 50 four-car sets.

The trains are due to enter service from next year as part of a EUR 2.5 billion programme to expand and modernise the NS rolling stock fleet.
