Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB), the public transport operator for the European capital, has awarded CAF a contract for a term of 12 years which includes the supply of 43 units for the Brussels Metro, totalling an amount of EUR 353 million, with the option to order up to 47 additional trains during this period. The contract involves cutting edge trains equipped with state of the art technology for this type of vehicles, which will migrate in the course of the project from operation with the current signalling system to operation with CBTC signalling system.
The new metro series will form a part of a macro project which will modernise the Brussels metro. Initially, the project will be implemented on lines 1 and 5 and in various stages: the first trains will be delivered in 2019.
