Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) will receive a BGN 175 million-subsidy (EUR 80 million) state aid in 2016. The decision passed second hearing despite opposition from certain MPs, who stated that the income from the concession of Sofia Airport should not be directed towards such subsidies.
Despite a slowly going sector reform, including asset shedding and partial renewal of the rolling stock, BDZ is currently Bulgaria’s only passenger railway carrier.
