Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski announced that Bulgaria will provide a BGN 224 million (EUR 114.6 million) interest-free loan to indebted state-owned railways operator BDZ. BDZ’s timeframe for repayment of the loan was not disclosed. Currently, BDZ’s debts amount to BGN 350 million (EUR 179 million), Moskovski said.
After partially covering BDZ’s debt, a procedure for acquiring new rolling stock will be launched, Ivaylo Moskovski added. The funding for BDZ will come from the proceeds of a concession contract for Sofia International Airport.
