The total cost of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line project could reach approx. HUF 700 billion (EUR 2.2 billion), according to the “Magyar Nemzet” newspaper, citing unnamed government sources. This is an increase compared to the first estimates, which were placing the project cost at approximately HUF 472 billion (EUR 1.54 billion).
The credit which the government could receive from the Export-Import Bank of China for this project would amount to HUF 467.5 billion (EUR 1.53 billion). The interest for this credit may amount to HUF 97.5-144.5 billion (EUR 318-472 million). Since the credit would cover only 85% of the total costs, the Hungarian government might also need to allocate an additional HUF 82.5 billion (EUR 270 million).
