Budapest Transport Company (BKV) called for a HUF 65 bln (EUR 211 mln) tender for the refurbishment of 222 carriages used on Budapest’s M3 metro line. However, the amount that would be sufficient for the purchase of new carriages. BKV estimates that the winning party will be required to carry out the authorisation process which includes testing and obtaining the permission to place into service as well as physical alterations. If new metro cars are available for a similar price, companies are invited to offer new vehicles. The deadline for applications is December 23. A winner is expected to be announced in May 2015.
A local report claims that Bucharest (Romania) just bought new carriages from CAF for the same amount that BKV is spending on the refurbishments, therefore runners-up could potentially provide the replacement of the current carriages with brand new vehicles.
