Barcelona inaugurated extension of driverless metro network

Siemens rüstete die U-Bahnlinie L9 in Barcelona mit dem Zugbeeinflussungssystem Trainguard MT CBTC (Computer Based Train Control) für den fahrerlosen Betrieb aus. Die Linie 9 ist damit die erste fahrerlose U-Bahn in Spanien. Der Lieferumfang umfasste sowohl die Strecken- als auch die Fahrzeugausrüstung, die den Zug vollautomatisch und somit sicher ohne Zugbegleitung steuert. Siemens has equipped metro line L9 in Barcelona with Trainguard MT CBTC, a system which brings the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) technology and enables a driverless operation. This means that Line 9 is the first driverless metro line in Spain. The scope of supply included both wayside and on-board equipment which runs the train in full automation, in perfect safety and without attendant personnel.

A 19,6 km Barcelona driverless metro line started services on February 12. The longest of its kind in Europe, the north-south Line 9 Sud in the west of the city connects the area with stations at both terminals of the airport. Barcelona Metro Operator TMB says with the opening of Line 9 Sud city’s total length of the metro network increased about 20 %. The 15-station section of Line 9 is El Prat’s second rail connection after the existing suburban line. The line has 15 stations including six interchanges. Trains operate at seven-minute headways.
It is expected that ridership on the line reach 23 million passenger per year. With this line Barcelona has 30,5 km driverless metro line.
